Sweet orange is an evergreen small tree, 3-8m high. The crown is round, branched, glabrous, with or without thorns, and the young branches are angular. Leaves are alternate, single compound leaves; petiole is 0.6-2cm long, leaf wing is narrow, 2-3mm wide, and jointed at the top; the leaf blade is thick, elliptical or ovate, 6-12cm long, 2.3-5.5cm wide, with short or acuminate tip, slightly concave, base is broadly cuneate or rounded, wavy green, or with inconspicuous wavy serrations, with translucent oil glands. Flowers are clustered in the axils of leaves, white, with petioles; calyx is 3-5 lobed, with triangular lobes; petals are 5, tongue-shaped, about 1.5cm long, about 7mm wide, and curled outward; stamens are 19-28, filaments are connected to 5-12 bundles at the bottom, pistil is 1, ovary is nearly spherical, 10-13 chambers, stigma is capitate, style is thin, and does not fall off. The fruit is oblate or nearly spherical, 6-9cm in diameter, orange-yellow or orange-red, with a thick peel that is not easy to peel off, 8-13 pulp capsules, yellow juice, and sweet taste. The seeds are wedge-shaped and oval, with a smooth surface. The flowering period is April, and the fruit ripening period is November-December.
