Corn germ meal nutrition and benefits

Corn germ meal nutrition and benefits

Today I have nothing to do, so I would like to introduce corn germ meal to you. It is very good.

Corn Germ Meal Overview

Corn germ meal is a byproduct of corn germ as raw material, which is extracted by pressing or soaking. It is also called corn navel meal. Generally, corn is soaked, crushed, and the germ is separated before producing corn starch, and then the oil is extracted. There are two types of oil extraction processes: dry method and wet method. After the oil is extracted, corn germ meal is obtained.

Nutritional characteristics of corn germ

Corn germ meal contains 18% to 20% crude protein, 1% to 2% crude fat, and 11% to 12% crude fiber. Its amino acid composition is similar to that of corn gluten feed (or corn gluten feed). Although it is called cake and meal, most products belong to mid-range energy feed according to the international feed classification method. From the perspective of protein quality, although the protein quality of corn germ meal is higher than that of cereal energy feed, the content of various limiting amino acids is lower than that of corn gluten meal and cotton and rapeseed cake and meal.

The crude protein content and crude fiber content of dry corn germ meal are lower than those of wet corn germ meal, and the effective energy values of the two are similar. The content of minerals and trace elements varies depending on the processing technology.

Application characteristics of corn germ

Since corn germ meal contains more fiber, the amount of corn germ meal should be limited for monogastric omnivorous animals such as pigs and poultry. It is not recommended to add it to piglets; the appropriate amount to add to growing and finishing pigs is 2%~8% to control back fat; 1%~3% for sows, and attention should be paid to the problem of mycotoxins; no more than 5% for laying hens; no need to add it to broilers, and no more than 4% for laying ducks. It is not suitable to add it to carnivorous animals. It is a good energy supplement feed for herbivorous animals such as cattle. The amount of addition can reach 10%.

Corn germ meal

Corn germ meal with slurry is actually made by spraying corn slurry (mainly a small amount of soluble sugars and soluble nitrogenous substances) produced in the process of corn starch production back onto corn germ meal, and then drying it. In this process, the nitrogenous substances increase, so the crude protein content increases. In appearance, it is darker in color and has a sour smell than normal corn germ meal, so its palatability is reduced.
