[Plant morphology] Coix (Ben Jing), also known as: Gan (Shuowen), Wu Ru (Bie Lu), Yu Shu (Yang's Experience Prescriptions), Cao Bodhi (Cao Mu Bian Fang), Coix, Guizhu Arrow, Urine Pond Grass, Iron Corn, Blind Eye Tree, Guizhu Millet, and Bianpo Chrysanthemum.

Annual or perennial herb. The fibrous roots are thick and can reach 3 mm in diameter. The culm is erect, 1 to 1.5 meters high, with about 10 nodes. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, up to 30 cm long, 1.5 to 3 cm wide, with rough edges, thick midribs, and raised on the back; the leaf sheaths are smooth, and the upper ones are shorter than the internodes; the ligules are hard and about 1 mm long. The racemes are axillary and bundled; the female spikelets are located at the bottom of the inflorescence, wrapped in a bony rosary-shaped involucre, which is about the same length as the spikelets; the first glume of the fertile spikelet is membranous at the bottom, thick papery at the top, and obtuse at the apex; the second glume is boat-shaped, wrapped in the first glume, with a thick papery apex and gradually pointed; the second lemma is shorter than the first lemma; the palea is similar to the lemma but smaller, with 3 stamens, degenerate; the pistil has a long style; the sterile spikelets degenerate into long cylindrical glumes. Male spikelets are usually 2 to 3 in one node; the first glume of sessile male spikelet is flat, with wings of unequal width folded inward on both sides, blunt at the tip, and with many veins; the second glume is boat-shaped, also with many veins; both the lemma and palea are thin membranes; 3 stamens; stalked male spikelets are similar to sessile ones, but smaller or more degenerate. Caryopsis is wrapped in a hard involucre, ovate or ovoid-globose. Flowering period is from July to September. Fruiting period is from September to October.

They are mostly grown beside houses, in wilderness, by rivers, streams or in shady and wet valleys. They are distributed in most parts of the country and are generally cultivated.
