1. Phragmites australis is cool in nature, can clear away heat and remove fire, and has obvious effects on bad breath caused by deficiency fire. It can be combined with Radix Rehmanniae and Licorice to make the decoction tasty and have a stronger effect.

2. Raw reed root porridge, specially for treating bad breath caused by dry tongue or swollen gums. Ingredients: 30g reed root, 50g rice. Method: Wash the reed root and put it into a pot, add appropriate amount of water and cook over high heat for 15 minutes, remove the residue and keep the juice, add rice and cook into porridge, take 1 dose per day, preferably on an empty stomach every morning, and the effect will be seen after about 5 doses.

3. Use the Chinese medicine reed root and mint to treat bad breath. Use the Chinese medicine reed root, mint, patchouli decoction, or 1% hydrogen peroxide, 2% soda water, 2% boric acid water, etc., choose one of them to gargle, which can reduce or eliminate bad breath.

4. Reed root tea: use 50 grams of reed root, add water to boil a cup of soup, add appropriate amount of rock sugar to drink. Take one dose a day, and use it for several doses to get rid of bad breath. This recipe is most suitable for bad breath caused by lung heat and stomach heat.

(2) Phragmites australis is mainly used in the following two aspects in clinical practice: it can clear lung heat and remove phlegm and pus, and it can also clear stomach heat and produce body fluid to stop vomiting. Although it is cold in nature, it tastes sweet and mild and is strong. It can only be used as an auxiliary medicine to clear the lung and stomach. However, it has an advantage that it is not greasy in nature and produces body fluid without clinging to pathogens. It can be used in all cases of febrile diseases where heat clings to the Wei and Qi, or in cases where there is thirst after a fever due to damage to body fluid. Reed stem soup originally used the above-ground stems of reeds, not the rhizomes of reeds. However, since general pharmacies do not have them, reed roots are used instead. It has been used clinically for a long time, which shows that reed stems and reed roots have the same effect. Therefore, fresh reed roots can be collected and used together with reed stems in rural cooperative medical stations, which not only saves manpower for digging reed roots, but also expands the source of medicine.
