Sun Luxi said that since human food is mostly protein or contains some spices, or oral or respiratory diseases, these are all causes of bad breath. Japanese scholars have previously discovered that catechins in green tea have a very good effect in removing bad breath, even better than the commonly used chlorophyll copper.

Since there are many types of tea in Taiwan, in addition to green tea, there are also partially fermented teas such as Baozhong tea and oolong tea, as well as fully fermented teas such as black tea. Sun Luxi's research is to explore the effect of teas with different degrees of fermentation in removing bad breath.

Sun Luxi pointed out that the study on the deodorizing effect was based on the evaluation of the samples' ability to remove methyl mercaptan (a representative component of bad breath). The results showed that black tea with very low catechin content also has a very good deodorizing effect. Further testing found that the main effect was exerted by the theaflavins in black tea.
