Cultivation methods and precautions of iron tree

Cultivation methods and precautions of iron tree

Cycads are often used as ornamental plants in gardens. It is important to learn more about the cultivation methods and precautions of cycads, otherwise they will become sick or die. Let's discuss this together today.

Cultivation method of iron tree

1. Soil selection

Cycas revoluta prefers sandy loam, which is well-drained, loose and fertile. Do not use clay soil with poor drainage. It is recommended to mix leaf mold, sandy loam with a small amount of decomposed horse manure and other manure to make the culture soil.

2. Temperature requirements

The most suitable environment for the growth of cycads is high humidity and ventilation. In the north, they should be moved outdoors in early April, and moved into the greenhouse for wintering before the frost in November. The room temperature in winter should be kept between 7℃ and 10℃. Cycads can also be said to be cold-resistant, and 0℃ to 5℃ is no problem.

3. Lighting requirements

The iron tree needs sunlight, warmth and a humid growing environment. It is most afraid of exposure to the sun in summer and can be kept in a place with strong light in all seasons.

4. Watering management:

After watering the cycad once in spring, autumn and winter, you need to wait until the soil in the pot is dry before watering it again. In summer, except for rainy days, you should water it once a day and spray water on the leaves, but do not let water accumulate. Too much water will cause root rot and eventually cause death.

5. Potted plant maintenance

Potted cycads should be placed in different flower pots or wooden barrels according to the size of the cycads. Use humus-rich sand-added culture soil. The drainage holes at the bottom of the pots (barrels) should be enlarged and more broken tiles should be laid as drainage layers. Because the roots of cycads grow very slowly, it is sufficient to repot and add soil once every 3-4 years.

Precautions for the cultivation of iron trees

1. The roots and the top of the stems of the cycad are poisonous, so be careful if you want to use the roots and stems of the cycad for medicinal purposes.

2. Avoid using clay soil for indoor potted cycads. Cycads prefer iron fertilizers.

3. In the hot summer, the iron tree will become dull in color. In order to improve this situation, you can add a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the fertilizer water. However, when watering, be careful not to use too much water and do not let water accumulate in the potting soil to avoid root rot and yellowing leaves.
