Sweet corn planting time

Sweet corn can be divided into two types: spring corn and autumn corn. Their planting times are also different. Spring corn is planted around the end of April each year and will mature and be available on the market in mid-to-late August, while autumn corn is planted after mid-July each year and will mature around mid-to-late October each year. If conditions permit, sweet corn can also be planted in greenhouses in winter.

Sweet corn planting technology

1. Soil selection

Sweet corn likes to grow in fertile soil with excellent water retention capacity. In addition, the soil should be neutral or slightly acidic, and have favorable drainage and watering conditions.

2. Pay attention to isolation when planting sweet corn

Isolation is very important when growing sweet corn. The pollen of sweet corn must not be mixed with the pollen of ordinary corn, otherwise the sweet corn grown will be genetically changed. The best way to isolate it is to stagger its pollination period with that of corn in the field.

3. Fertilization and pest control of sweet corn

During the growth period of sweet corn, attention should be paid to the supply of fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizer should be the main fertilizer, and some phosphorus, potassium and organic fertilizers should also be applied. Adequate supply of fertilizer can improve the quality of sweet corn. Fertilization should be carried out during the jointing and filling stages of sweet corn. In addition, attention should be paid to the prevention and control of aphids during the period of sweet corn trumpeting. If pests appear, spray drugs for timely treatment.

4. Sweet corn must be harvested in time

The harvesting time of sweet corn is also very important. It must be harvested twenty to twenty-five days after pollination, not too early or too late. The harvesting time should be chosen early in the morning or in the evening. Transporting the sweet corn in the evening after harvesting will help maintain its freshness.
