The petiole is short, thick at the base, and yellow-brown. The leaf sheath at the base of the petiole remains on the stem, forming sparse fibrous brown pieces. It blooms from May to July, and the spadix emerges from between the leaves and is multi-branched. The fruiting period is from August to September. The fruit is ovoid-spherical, with a slightly protruding tip, and is orange-yellow and shiny when ripe. The seeds are oval, with a deep groove in the center, and are gray-brown.

Growth characteristics of date palm

It is a sun-loving plant, light-loving and semi-shade-tolerant

Date palms like high temperatures and high humidity, and are heat and cold tolerant. The optimum temperature for growth is 20-30℃, and the wintering temperature is -5-10℃, but there are records of them surviving at lower temperatures. They are extremely wind resistant. They are salt and alkali tolerant, and can tolerate barrenness. They grow rapidly in fertile soil. Loam containing humus is best, and drainage is required. Sufficient basal fertilizer should be applied during planting, and topdressing should be done regularly after planting. Both organic and inorganic fertilizers are acceptable. They can be cultivated in the open field in tropical and subtropical areas, and need to be slightly covered in the Yangtze River Basin in winter. In the Huanghuai area, they need to be kept warm indoors during the winter.
