Classification of cowpea

Classification of cowpea

Cowpeas grow in summer and are a common vegetable and one of the common dishes. Today I will introduce the classification of cowpeas.

Cowpea Variety Classification

Cowpea can be divided into climbing type and dwarf type according to the growth habits of its stems.

(1) Sprawling type

The main vine and the side vines grow indefinitely, the main vine is up to 3~5m high, and has a left-handed nature. A support is required during cultivation. Side branches and inflorescences can grow between the leaf axils, and they bloom and produce pods one after another. The growth period is long and the yield is high.

(2) Dwarf type

The main stem is capped with flower buds after 4-8 nodes, the stem is upright, the plant is short, 40-50cm tall, with many branches. The growth period is short, maturity is early, the harvest period is short and concentrated, and the yield is low.

Vigna

The stems and vines grow vigorously, up to 4-5 meters or more, and a support is required for cultivation. The pods are more than 30-90 cm long, with less pod wall fiber, and the seeds are more swollen and tender. They are specially cultivated as vegetables, suitable for cooking or processing, and there are many excellent varieties. The long cowpeas in the growing period are hanging flowers and not fruiting. For example, early-maturing varieties include Red Mouth Swallow, Zhijiang 28-2, Sichuan Five Leaves, Chongqing Erba Cowpea, Guangzhou Tiexianqing, Longyan Seven Leaves, Guizhou Qingxian Cowpea; mid-maturing varieties include Sichuan White Fat Beans, Wuhan White Eel Bone, Guangzhou Dayeqing; late-maturing varieties include Sichuan Bailu Cowpea, Guangzhou Jinshan Beans, Zhejiang 512, Guizhou Fat Cowpea, Jiangxi, Guangzhou August Cowpea, Linong Gaoyou No. 4, Zhijiang 14, 28-2 Cowpea, Zhijiang Special 80, etc.

(l) Red-billed Swallowtail has vine-like pods, with the main vine producing pods. The first flowers are borne on the 4th and 5th nodes. There are many pods, which are white-green in color with purple-red at the ends. The pods are about 55 cm long and of medium quality. The seeds are black and the yield per mu is about 1,250 kg.

(2) Zhijiang 28-2 was developed by the Horticulture Institute of Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Climbing nature: The main vine bears pods. The first inflorescence grows at the 4th to 5th nodes, and there are inflorescences at every node after the 7th node. The young pods are light green, with many pods, early maturity and high yield, good quality, pod length of 65-75 cm, strong heat resistance, wide adaptability, strong resistance to aphids and mosaic virus, red-purple seeds, can be cultivated in spring, summer and autumn, and the yield per mu is more than 1750-2000 kg. It has become one of the main cultivated varieties in the country.

(3) The wiregrass has a green vine with 2-3 branches. The main vine begins to bloom from the 5th to 6th node. The young pods are dark green, 45-50 cm long, red at the end, and the seeds are light red. It is cold-resistant and has good quality.

(4) August cowpea, such as Jiangxi Sancun Late Bean Cowpea, has a vine-like nature with strong branching. The inflorescence begins to grow at the 1st or 2nd node of the vine. There are 2 to 3 pairs of flowers on each axis and 2 to 4 pods. The pods are dark purple and 20 to 30 cm long. It is heat-resistant and can be sown in early June and harvested in August and September. It has good quality.

(5) The white and plump cowpea is a vine-like plant. The first inflorescence grows at nodes 8-11, and then another inflorescence grows every 2-3 nodes. The pods are white and thick, about 36 cm long, 1.1 cm in diameter, and 1.2 cm thick. The seeds are dark brown, medium-ripe, thick and tender, sweet in taste, of good quality, and high in yield.

(6) Red eel has creeping bones and weak branching. The first inflorescence grows on the 4th or 5th node. The pod is 45-66 cm long and contains 16-22 seeds per pod. The seeds are earthy red and mature slightly late. They are not drought-tolerant but waterlogged. The pods are thick, crisp and tender, not easy to age, and have good quality. The yield per mu is about 1,250 kg.

Dwarf species

The plant height is 40-50 cm, the pod length is 30-50 cm, the fresh pod is tender, mature and hard, and oblate. The seed part does not swell obviously, and the fresh pods can be used as dishes or grains instead of grain. Such as Nanchang Yangzizhou black and red seeds, Shanghai and Nanjing Panxiang cowpea, Xiamen dwarf cowpea, Wuhan Wuyuexian, Anhui Yueyuehong, etc.

(l) The plant of Corydalis chinensis is short and has many branches. The pods are 20-26 cm long, light green with purple, and curled like a corydalis. It is sown in late June and the young pods are harvested from mid-September to mid-October. The quality is good but the yield is low.

(2) Mayfresh plant height is 50-68 cm, the first inflorescence is borne on the third node, the pod is 20-25 cm long, bluish-white, and the pods are mostly 12 seeds per pod. The seed coat is light red, and it matures very early, suitable for soaking. It can be sown from late March to July and is available in May to October.
